The experiences of Japan in handling the urban heat island issues are outlines in this report. Firstly, a brief introduction of the effects of urban heat island in Tokyo is given. Subsequently, the current urban heat island mitigating strategies taken by the Japanese government and the Tokyo metropolitan government are presented. Finally, the proposals from the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) in preventing urban heat island strategies are described.
